Chapter 22

“Happy New Year”

Ok it is 6 months away but hear me out. We celebrate it every December 31st with champagne, dumb hats, blow things that make an annoying noise and maybe someone to kiss.  Adios to the previous year we say to ourselves, “This New Year is GOING to be better!”  Better for you and me!  The clock strikes midnight and a ball drops in New York City as half a million, and likely a bunch of drunk revelers ring in January 1st.  New Years Eve is gone as is the previous year has come and gone.  The past is behind us and a new one has begun. More than likely you have the day off on January 1st and are either sleeping it off, maybe having a little “Hair of the Dog” or eating black eyed peas or cabbage or maybe even pork.  All those food supplements are “supposed” to bring ‘Good Luck’ or ‘Money’ maybe even both, in some capacity, and is it really related directly to what you eat on that day.  Money, Health, and Prosperity to name a few,….Yeah ok.    Me I never eat any of that foolishness or nasty arraignments of food because I do not believe it to be true!  Plus, I don’t like the majority of it. “Hog Wash”, nonsense and does it come true if you eat those disgusting things?  Now I do love me some pork.  Pork Chops, BBQ, Baby Back Ribs to name a few as long as it has ‘Sweet Baby Ray’s.’  But beyond that, the day (Jan.1) to me it is just ANOTHER day! An ordinary one. AND it does not come true if you eat it.

If you are lucky enough, your favorite football team or alma matter is competing for a prized trophy on January 1. So that means I don’t EVER have to worry about East Carolina playing on that day.  Oh, they play in ‘bowls’ just not the prestigious ones.  We play maybe as late or early as December 15th and that is it.  YES, the Pirates did win the Peach Bowl over NC State that year (1992), but afterwards 5 of the stars graduated; one drafted in the first round by the Cowboys and others drafted elsewhere.  Our coach said, ‘Peace’ Ima out of this place.  And that was the end.  MAYBE I should have eaten one of those nasty foods on January 1st and we could of repeated In 1993.  But who am I kidding it was never going to happen again sadly? And nothing I ate was going to change that. But it (1992) happened and it was glorious.

Neither or anything I eat on January 1, 2023, will change my current well-being.   Will I walk better? No. Will I write better? No. Will I still have my job? Hopefully.

Super Bowl 57 is in February 2023, but will the Packers be in it?  Hell No.   They will choke something a way and I will be filled with disappointment, yet again.  But that is the life we live. Filled with joy and disappointment. That is the thing about a new year…IT CHANGES NOTHING or maybe it changes everything.  A lost loved or yeah, maybe you will hit the lottery, get a raise, a nice bonus from the boss or welcome a new one into your home and that applies majority to kids, but what if it is a fur legged friend one that found his/her fUrever home.

Eat what you want and celebrate how you want, just do not leave it to one day of the year. Eat, Drink and be Merry 365 days out of the year.

Not just January 1st.
