Chapter 27

Just The News

A strip mall anchored by two restaurants, one nationally (maybe) known and one known by the local Triad area residents.  If you are looking from the street, one is on the left and the other on the right.  The one on the right far exceeds the one on the left.  But what does that matter. The sign advertising the shopping center looks like something out of the 50’s…and it very well may be.  In between is a hairdresser, a cute boutique shop called ‘The Feathered Nest’, most of you knew it as ‘The Lollipop Shop’ and if you grew up in Greensboro and dressed your kids, which I hope you did; well then YOU shopped there. ‘The Lollipop Shop’ was a staple in the ‘boro that was until the big box stores moved in selling cheap baby clothes and stuff from another country.  There is also a ‘Vape Shop’ and a little dive bar.  That ‘dive bar’ today made my day.  It actually made me well up in tears.  July 9th 2022, will go down as a day I will never forget.  And it was all thanks to dear friends I consider family.

What does this have to do with news, you may be asking yourself?  It has everything to do with NEWS.  The news it comes on everyday broadcasting from dawn in the morning, until dusk for the 5,6 and 11 too. Me I no longer watch the news as it is far to depressing.  If I need to know the weather, I look out the window.  The rest of the stuff, well; I can do without.

As you know by now my physical abilities are SHIT.  Yet here I was, amongst dear friends we all shared the same profession in a dive bar.  The News.

We all have co-workers.  But have you spent a day in a satellite truck working 18-plus hours with co-workers as a hurricane comes along the coast?  Praying the truck will not run out of gas because the power is out, and that means gas stations no longer are operational AND WE NEED GAS to keep the satellite truck to keep working.  Wet, tired, I mean exhausted and eating cheese crackers for lunch, dinner, and breakfast.  Probably not.  How about the Atlantic Coast Conference basketball championship?  Ok that was cool!  This is just a snapshot of what you happened to work in news  in the 80’ 90’.   We formed a brotherhood, a deep friendship.

Today I saw some of my old co-workers.  Majority of us in different careers, retired or some still on the air. We laughed over old NEWS stories and we caught up as though we were still working there, and it meant the world to me. And it all happened because of news and the profession we shared.

I love you guys and I always will.

PS this is my favorite CHAPTER and it is because of you guys.
